Bordering the bustling, yet somewhat placid Nelson Mandela Square, Remo’s Café Libertà entrancing interior pays tribute to Nelson Mandela and the restaurant is named for the freedom (‘Libertà’) that he fought so hard to achieve. Fans of Remo’s cuisine can look forward to the same hearty menu, with a strong focus on authentic Italian food and good-quality ingredients. Expect extra-large portions and options of everything from pizzas and pastas to cheese and charcuterie boards, piadinas, insalata and secondis. We started off with perfectly crisp arancini balls oozing mozzarella and artichoke and dipped in garlic aïoli. For mains, we lingered lovingly over the recommended River Café pasta with prawns sautéed in white wine, tomato paste, chilli and cream.
This, we complemented with a baked parmigiana con melanzane, bursting with Remo’s signature tomato sauce. And we couldn’t resist digging into the couverture chocolate brownie with peppercorn ice cream to finish things off. Nelson Mandela Square, Shop 31, Sandton; 011-883-0664; remos.co.za.
