Dominique enjoys sushi in the city…

Dominique Brown is F&HE’s features writer. She’s the resident Durbanite who constantly craves sunshine and wine. An avid cook and consumer of food, she’s dabbled in urban veggie-growing and chicken-rearing. If you meet her she will probably try to feed you.

Food editor Leila and myself decided to celebrate our return to gym (in anticipation of summer) with some sushi and wine, and so we found ourselves at Tsunami in the Morningside Shopping Centre. The place was buzzing with people, crowding the pavements and baring their arms in the almost muggy atmosphere. Being a Durbs girl myself, I had never experienced this change in season until venturing to the big smoke. I still marvel at the way people’s demeanour completely changes as September approaches. Tsunami offers a vast menu including seafood as well as an extensive selection of sushi. Offering the usual nigiri, fashion sandwiches, maki and more, I was intrigued to see the Designer Sushi section. With a plateful of delicious sushi in front of us, it was the Reef Maki that we decided would have us coming back for more! Crispy salmon skin with cooked seaweed, rice and ponzu sauce, it was a fantastic combination of textures and flavours – different and delightful. Oh, and don’t forget to wash it down with a chilled bottle of crisp white wine!
