There are two golden rules for dining in Camps Bay. First, it’s not going to be cheap. Second, first-floor restaurants beat pavement eateries hands down. Both apply at Del Mar, where even the gorgeous views over the sparkling Atlantic won’t distract you from the superb Mexican food on offer. No Tex- Mex here though, rather modern Mexican cuisine packing depths of flavour and a sombrero-load of spice. Start with your choice of ceviche – the sea bass in jalapeño, coriander and lemon was fiery, but superb – before moving on to the small-plate antojitos: street food given an upmarket twist. You could dine happily on these and the sides of guacamole, salsa, black beans and tortillas, but the main courses and taco dishes are worth exploring. The tiradito pollo – chicken chopped with chilli, onions and green pepper, served with a pile of soft tortillas – was a highlight. There are over two dozen premium tequilas and margaritas on offer, alongside a handful of craft beers and a compact wine list. Shop 104, The Promenade, Victoria Road, Camps Bay; 021-437-0333.
