Situated in the quiet neighbourhood of Constantia, the new and popular El Pistolero is quaint and bustling, so be prepared to wait if you go on peak Friday nights or Saturdays. The menu boasts great Mexican street- and market fare prepared with care and artfulness. Try the ‘street snacks’ melon, cucumber and mango salad: long blocks of fruit and vegetables, drizzled with lime juice and hit with a pinch of chilli powder – they’re juicy, fresh and flavoursome with a slight bite. The fish tacos tasted great, with interesting flavours of tamarind and mayo, topped with handfuls of greens. The portions are just big enough to leave you some room for dessert, which was great as I had been waiting to try their churros all day! Served beautifully in wooden bowls with a white-chocolate dipping sauce, it was definitely the highlight of the evening. Crispy on the outside, melted on the inside, these South American long doughnuts couldn’t get any better.
