Stepping into the hidden space of Hail Pizza feels like you’ve landed yourself in a little hush-hush heaven, right in the hustle and bustle that is Bree Street. This rectangular room, filled with a few long tables for sharing, is dreamily illuminated with candles and low lighting to set the tone for a laid-back, mellow evening. The bar, which runs the length of the room, is host to a pretty serious collection of beers and cocktails, with about a dozen wines on the list. One particular cocktail that caught our eye was The Pineapple Party, consisting of tequila, beer, pineapple juice and fresh mint. A one-pager menu has a small selection of seven pizzas, four salads and six oysters to start. This compact yet creative offering definitely puts a twist on the traditional – look out for interesting topping additions like kale, fried egg and breadcrumbs; the Eggplant Parm! hitting number 1 on our list: aubergine, crème fraîche, breadcrumbs and basil. What stood out? Hail Pizza has broken away from classic Italian wafer-thin bases; with, instead, a slightly thicker wood-fired base, crisped to perfection with a charcoal-dusted crust made of sweet and chewy dough. Make sure you catch them after work for drinks and a quick bite. 133 Bree Street, City Bowl; 072 349 3551.
