With a legacy dating back 52 years, it’s with good reason The Hussar Grill has stood the test of time. Its latest addition to the family at Sandton’s Morningside Shopping Centre boasts dark wood-panelled walls, built-in booth seating and black-and-white checkerboard floors – the familiar signature decor of the steakhouse chain. House specialities like the carpetbagger fillet mignon stuffed with smoked oysters, Cheddar and topped off with a brandy and wholegrain mustard sauce give a nostalgic nod to yesteryear. My choice of fillet on the bone with creamy and beautifully aerated Béarnaise sauce (served at room temperature as it should be), earthy pan-fried mushrooms and crisp onion rings left me grinning like a (rather rounded) Cheshire cat. With no capacity left for the more substantial desserts like baked cheesecake and malva pudding, I opted for a little liquid love in the form of the signature dessert, their chocolate vodka martini… I’m not sure if it was shaken but it certainly stirred up joy in my heart.
