If no one can, Mexican! Mexican cuisine is becoming a mucho grande deal in SA, with the latest offering opening its doors in Weltevreden Park, Roodepoort. Stepping into the restaurant, you forget any predispositions you may have about Mexican eateries and are transported to an authentic, modern and colourful space where meals are served under the Mexican sunburst expanding the ceiling above us. Expect all of the classics on the menu: from burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, tacos and nachos to quesadillas and more. The Tequileria (tequila cocktail bar) upstairs offers 42 different 100% agave tequilas. We started off with a selection of totopos con chile (tortillas smothered in a spicy red salsa) and the jalapeño croqueta, which paired perfectly with their famous frozen margaritas. Resisting the urge to taco into everything else on the menu, I opted to assemble my own burrito and stuffed it with all of my favourites – pork carnitas, refried beans, salsa verde, Cheddar, mozzarella and avocado. For dessert, only churros would do and, smothered with salted caramel, it was the perfect way to end off a fiesta Mexicana!
