How do you get a Capetonian to leave their house? Give them a windless, sunny day and somewhere to go with beautiful views. This was just the case for the launch of The Lawns’ Winter Market at The Roundhouse on 8 July: the market opened for business on a picture-perfect winter’s day—and the Capetonians (and others of course) came in their droves.
While there is quite a bit of parking, my first tip would be to come in an Uber or be dropped off, as navigating the twists and turns of this mountainside location is complicated.
Location, location, location
Perched on the glens that form part of the Table Mountain National Park, the green terraced lawns open up to views of Camps Bay and the sun-sequinned Atlantic.
This isn’t your usual market: the idea is that people enjoy the lifestyle stalls while ordering food from The Lawns Restaurant (previously known as Rumbulion). There are a couple of food stalls too, on this occasion there was one selling gorgeous artisan bread and happily, right next door to it, a stall with French products from wine to cheese, foraged mushrooms and more. There are also some confectionaries to try from Bliss, Cocoafair and Bentley’s Bakery. (They are currently in talks to add more food stalls.)
What else does a Capetonian love on a sunny day? Craft beer of course, on arrival we immediately sated our thirst with Little Wolf’s acclaimed selection of beers.
My next tip? Bring a shopping bag: shopaholics will love the range of things to browse from home décor and clothing to jewellery. The versatile range available was chosen with the ethos of supporting local South African products. Expect goods from brands such as the SANGA Collection, Macrame wall hangings, Unsheep, Beau de Jour, Threads That Bind Us, Clay Creations 56 and Novella. Some of the great clothing stalls include Temple of Reason, Sexy Socks, Urban Huntress, Mamita & Me and That Kid Cole.
Bring the family, round up the friends and enjoy the live music, the opportunity to shop so many local brands at once—and to simply savour a beautiful winter’s day in an incredible location.
Winter Market on The Lawns at The Roundhouse, first Sunday of the month until November from 10am to 3pm (weather dependent).
