Jozi, there is a new kid on the block and it’s not to be missed. On a recent trip to Montecasino, we came across Malt Barrel & Fire, a gastro pub with a varied and extensive food and beverage menu that puts the spotlight firmly on malts of every kind, from beer to milkshakes and whisky.
The huge selection of malts includes 16 draught beers on tap, over 40 bottled beers from around the world, an ever-growing selection of more than 80 different whiskies – malts and blends, delicious and different cocktails for every occasion, spirits of all types, carefully selected wines and really great tasting milkshakes.
For the hungry, the menu offers a delicious selection of breakfast and brunch options, as well as snacks and light meals, platters to share, salads, burgers, pizzas, grills and desserts. We opted for a platter to share (to enjoy the best of everything on the menu) and a huge winner in everyone’s books were the Firecracker ribs – sweet BBQ pork or beef ribs basted with a lemon-peri sauce. Vingerleklekker. Other mouth-watering dishes on the menu include deep-fried, crumbed, fresh avocado and fried haloumi cheese served with sriracha mayo (delish) and spatchcock chicken basted in peri-peri or lemon-herb served with a side of crispy fries.
When it came time for dessert, we opted for a selection of dreamy chocolate mousse, panna cotta and a caramel popcorn – it’s suffice to say that we rolled out of there.
Malt Barrel & Fire gets its name from the four fireplaces and four burning barrels that make it the perfect venue for chilly winter nights.
If you are heading to the Teatro, make sure you stop at Malt Barrel & Fire first and ask your waiter for the quick order items for Teatro patrons – it’s sure to be the perfect start to what is sure to be a wonderful evening.
