After 25 years as SA’s favourite Greek restaurant, Plaka refreshes its flagship Cresta store.
For over 25 years, Plaka has remained South Africa’s go-to Greek restaurant and now the family-owned restaurant chain has given its flagship Cresta a facelift. The refreshed décor and a new menu pays tribute to Plaka’s long-standing philosophy of modern traditional Greek faire.
The name Plaka pays tribute to the old historical neighborhood of Athens and the heart-beat of the Greece’s modern capital on the slopes of the Acropolis. “It’s this tapestry of traditional culture within a modern society that we continue to bring to Plaka in South Africa,” explains Angelo Haitas, founder and owner of Plaka.
The menu still includes many traditional favourites like calamari, pastitsio, kleftiko, whole grilled linefish, prawns and lamb chops. But it also includes some new, more contemporary dishes such as honey-mustard pork fillet and a delicious family-sized portion of fisherman’s pasta.
The menu also offers street food such as yiros, souvlaki and toasted pitas are of course on offer for quick meal on the go.
We highly recommend ordering an array of mezé starters. Plaka recommends ordering 2 dishes per person. Our favourites? Spanakopita (a crispy phyllo pastry filled with spinach and feta) and feta in phyllo with honey and sesame. A delicious Greek salad and the tomato and onion salad is also a must! And don’t forget to add halloumi, a pita basket and a side of tzatziki to your order.
For mains, you cannot go wrong with ordering from the “Family Table” section of the menu. All of the dishes in this section will serve 4. The leg of lamb was a real winner, along with the prawns! We were also real fans of the whole grilled fish.
Dessert-lovers can look forward to traditional Greek favourites. As an added bonus, diners can enjoy the bottomless soda fountain which offers unlimited refills of Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, Fanta and Crème Soda!
Each dish has a special dose of Greek magic to make it authentic and delicious.
