Five-spice pork with almonds

An Asian inspired meal for when those take away cravings hit. Try this delicious Five-spice pork with almonds recipe for the perfect mid-week meal.

SERVES 4-6 /HANDS-ON 40 min / TOTAL TIME  40  min

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 750 g pork fillets thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tbsp peanut oil
  • 1 carrot, cut into long thin strips
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp finely grated ginger
  • 4 baby bok choy, halved lengthways 
  • 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • ¼ cup oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 100 g mange tout peas, trimmed 

TO SERVE

  • Rice noodles, cooked according to instructions
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • 80g bean sprouts
  • 55g blanched almonds, roasted, coarsely chopped

METHOD

COMBINE pork and spices in a bowl, toss to coat well.

HEAT half the oil in a wok over high heat, stir fry pork in batches until browned and tender, remove and set aside.

HEAT remaining oil in wok. Add carrot, garlic and ginger. Stir fry for 2 minutes, then add the  choy, sauces, juice and hot water. Stir-fry for 4 minutes until the bok choy is tender.

RETURN pork to wok with the peas and stir-fry until heated through.

To serve 

SERVE pork on rice noodles topped with bean sprouts and almonds, with a wedge of lime on the side.

  • 1 carrot, cut into long thin strips
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp finely grated ginger

  • 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • ¼ cup oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 100 g mange tout peas, trimmed 
  • TO SERVE

  • 1 lime, cut into wedges

Notes

Chinese five spice powder is the chinese version of garam masala, having both of them in this dish just ensures that the flavours will really pop! The common spices in chinese 5 spice are cloves, cinnamon, star anise, fennel and depending on the region, sichuan peppercorns or ginger.
