This soul-soothing winter drink blends the bold heat of ginger and warming spices like cinnamon and cloves with a splash of honey and citrus to brighten every sip. Whether you’re curled up with a book or entertaining guests fireside, this spiced concoction is the ultimate seasonal comfort in a cup — and with just the right kick to chase the cold away.

    The herb mint, added for taste, is also a strong digestive aid, traditionally used to treat stomach aches and chest pains.

    Hot and spicy winter toddy

    Serves: 2

    Ingredients

    • 500ml water
    • 1 orange, quartered
    • 10 cloves
    • 2 cinnamon sticks
    • 30ml ginger
    • 10ml honey
    • 25ml rum or brandy, optional
    • piece of lemon rind
    • 6 fresh mint leaves
    • cinnamon stick, to serve

    Instructions

    Put the water in a pot and add the orange, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and honey. Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes.

    Turn the heat off and let the mixture steep for a further 30 minutes. Strain.

    Reheat the liquid and pour into 2 mugs. Add the rum, lemon rind and mint, and use a long cinnamon stick to stir and serve. Drink while still hot.
