Curtains are sometimes the real MVP of a room. They help diffuse or even block light, add colour to the space, help create an energetic or subdued vibe, block particles and dust that would otherwise irritate your airways – and so much more. Keeping them clean can be a huge task (especially if your curtains are made from heavier or specialised fabrics). It usually involves a lot of hard work and physical exertion.
The good news? You don’t always have to take down your curtains to clean them!
Discover how to clean curtains without taking them down, and when it’s necessary for a deeper clean.
How to clean curtains without taking them down
The easiest way to refresh and clean your curtains is to leave them hanging as is. In the meantime, reserve a special day for a deeper clean. Cleaning curtains while they’re hanging is the perfect routine for weekly or monthly cleans – here’s how:
What you’ll need:
- Vacuum cleaner
- Lint roller or tape wrapped around your fingers or a soft brush
- Steamer
- A small container filled with water and dish soap, and a microfibre cloth for spot cleaning
Steps
- Start by opening the windows or doors behind the curtains. Fresh air and some sunlight will help de-odourise the fabric and ensure all the dust, debris and other particles don’t just collect on the floor or windowsills, but are transported outside with a broom or fresh breeze.
- Open the curtains so they aren’t bunched up and stretched out.
- Vacuum, using the soft brush attachment, the curtains from top to bottom, on both sides. Use the lowest suction setting if you can to make it a little easier.
- Use the lint roller (or alternatives) to remove pet dander, hair, and other debris from the fabric.
- Find any spots and use the soapy water and microfibre cloth to clean. Dab the cloth in the water to dampen and then gently dab the spot from the edge to the centre. Do not rub, as this will cause further spreading. Rinse out the cloth as much as is needed.
- Steam either side of the curtains with a hand-held/portable/vertical steamer. This helps freshen the fabric, remove creases and odours without needing any product.
- Air out before restyling. Leave the curtains stretched out for at least 30 minutes before tying up or styling again.
When it’s time to deep clean
While cleaning curtains without taking them down is a lifesaver for weekly or monthly cleaning tasks, there comes a time when vacuuming, spot treating and steaming just won’t do. Take your curtains down for a deeper clean at least once or twice a year. Kitchen curtains or those exposed to smoke need more frequent cleaning to get rid of potential grime build-up. You can usually pop most curtains in the washing machine and line dry, but always check the care label for specific instructions.
