• We all know the habit of putting leftovers in the freezer when our main fridge is full. Although this is a great alternative to throwing away leftovers, there is a list of foods that are recommended not to be placed in the freezer, especially if they contain ingredients that are high in dairy or simply are concentrated with lots of water.

We give a breakdown of 7 foods to never place in your freezer.

    Cucumber:

There is nothing like a delicious green salad with huge chunks of cucumber to add that extra something special. But cucumber is recommended to not be placed in your freezer for preservation. This is due to the high concentration of water contained in cucumbers which are likely to expand and crystalise resulting in soft/mushy inedible cucumbers.

    Eggs:

Eggs that are still in their shells should never be frozen because of water inside the egg running the risk of expanding and cracking the hard shell which can then increase the risk of bacteria and contamination in your freezer.

    Cream cheese:

Most foods containing dairy or heavy dairy ingredients are suggested to not be frozen in the freezer due to the separation of fats. With cream cheese products whether alone or in leftovers the cream cheese will turn into a water consistency once defrosted due to the separation of fats.

    Cooked Pasta:

A versatile dish loved by most pasta you might seem like a good dish to freeze if there are leftovers. We recommend never storing pasta as it will lose its original form and not look or taste as good after being defrosted.

    Mayonnaise:

Mayo, similar to cream cheese, should never be frozen because of the risk of fat separation which can turn either the mayo or dish containing mayo clumpy.

    Tomatoes:

If your dish contains a significant number of tomatoes whether whole or cut into chunks, freezing the dish will change the texture and flesh of the tomato changing the overall taste.

    Fried food:

Foods that are enjoyed for their crispy texture like fried chicken are recommended to not be frozen as they can become soggy and not taste as great.
