• What better way to spend the weekend than strolling through some of Cape Town’s iconic farmers’ markets? Local crafts, a myriad of fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, charcuterie and more – it’s exactly what we need to kickstart the weekend the right way.

Here are five farmers’ markets in and around Cape Town perfect for weekend meandering:

    Oranjezicht City Farm Market (OZCF)

A definite Cape Town favourite, the OZCF Market lies in the heart of Granger Bay. Shielded from the bustling city life just outside its border, you can stroll from stall to stall with a freshly brewed coffee or juice in one hand and a freshly baked pastry in the other.

Sounds like a morning well spent to us.

Shop for veg, fruit, bread and organic dairy at the weekly market, or sample some of the deliciously prepared food. With three bars to choose from, a variety of food and snack options and beautiful sea and mountain views, it’s got everything you want in a weekend market.

    • Location: Haul Road, Granger Bay Boulevard, V&A Waterfront
    • Dates: Saturday, 8:15am to 2pm | Sunday 9am to 2pm

Food is not the only thing available, make sure to purchase a few local crafts, jewellery and fashion if you can. This is fun for the entire family, including the kids. Pony rides, pedal carts, soccer darts and jumping castles are bound to keep them entertained. The market is also dog-friendly.

Browse and indulge in good food, wine and craft beers, as well as quality design, art, vintage clothing and antiques. While strolling through the streets of this quaint town, the sounds of upbeat live music creates a happy ambience among the historic oak trees.

The market offers a children’s play area and it is also pet-friendly, so you can bring along your fur-babies too.

Keep in mind to fill your pockets (ATMs are within walking distance) or ready your SnapScan as the market has limited credit card facilities.

Located in the lush valley of Elgin, this farmers’ market offers visitors a unique experience. The Elgin Railway Market is held within an old apple warehouse, which has been converted into an ‘art-deco, steampunk’ space.

There are plenty of activities to keep the kids busy too, including a jungle gym, roundabout and indoor and outdoor climbing walls.
