If you’ve ever bitten into a burger so juicy it practically melts in your mouth, chances are Wagyu beef had something to do with it. Famous for its rich marbling and buttery flavour, Wagyu has become the gold standard for burger lovers looking to elevate their next cheat meal.
Fortunately, Cape Town’s food scene has fully embraced the trend, with a handful of restaurants serving everything from classic Wagyu cheeseburgers to creative takes that push burger boundaries. Whether you’re a purist who believes a great patty speaks for itself or someone who loves all the loaded toppings, these are the spots worth adding to your must-try list.
1. Zuney Wagyu Burgers
When Cape Town locals start debating the city’s best burgers, Zuney is almost always part of the conversation. Located on Kloof Street, this popular (and award-winning) burger spot uses certified Wagyu beef sourced from the owners’ family farms in the Eastern Cape. The result? Burgers that are packed with flavour without needing a long list of toppings. Their signature Wagyu burgers are paired with fries cooked in Wagyu fat, making the entire experience wonderfully indulgent.
2. IRON Steak and Bar
If you’re after a more elevated burger experience, IRON Steak and Bar’s celebrated Wagyu burger deserves a place on your list – and it’s one of my personal favourites. The restaurant’s signature creation features double Wagyu patties layered with truffle mayo and melted cheese on a soft potato bun, served alongside their famous Wagyu-dripping fries. It was recently named one of Cape Town’s standout Wagyu burgers by Time Out and has developed a loyal following among burger enthusiasts.
3. LA Farms
Part deli, part butchery and part eatery, LA Farms takes a farm-to-table approach to Wagyu. Their beef comes directly from the family’s West Coast farm, and their burgers showcase the quality of the meat with carefully balanced toppings and house-made sauces. If you’re feeling particularly hungry, their Wagyu brisket burger is a serious contender.
4. Hudson’s The Burger Joint
Known for its gourmet burgers, Hudson’s has added a Wagyu smash burger to its menu that’s won over plenty of fans. Featuring smashed Wagyu patties, melted cheddar and grilled onions on a buttery brioche bun, it’s proof that sometimes simple really is best.
5. AA Paraatha Wagyu Burgers
Looking for something a little different? Head to Mojo Market in Sea Point, where AA Paraatha Wagyu Burgers combines premium Wagyu smash patties with flaky Indian paratha bread instead of traditional burger buns. Inspired by a viral Dubai food trend, it’s one of the city’s most unique burger experiences.
Why Wagyu burgers are worth the hype
Unlike conventional beef, Wagyu cattle are renowned for their intricate fat marbling. As the burger cooks, that fat melts into the meat, creating a richer flavour and more tender texture. The result is a burger that’s juicy, deeply savoury and packed with umami in every bite.
Cape Town is certainly not short on exceptional burgers, but Wagyu takes things to another level. There’s a Wagyu burger in the Mother City with your name on it.
Just remember to bring extra napkins.
