• There’s nothing quite like a warm apple and oat crumble fresh from the oven. Sweet Golden Delicious apples are gently spiced with cinnamon before being topped with a buttery oat crumble made with demerara sugar and baked until crisp and golden. Serve it warm with a generous spoonful of clotted cream for the ultimate comforting dessert.

    Apple and oat crumble

    Serves: 4 to 6
    Prep Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 35 to 40 minutes

    Ingredients

    • 4 to 6 Golden delicious apples, cored, peeled and chopped into chunks
    • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
    • 2 tbsp cornflour
    • 2 tbsp water
    • 1 tsp vanilla essence
    • 1/4 cup brown sugar
    • 2 cups cake flour
    • 1/2 demerera sugar (brown or white sugar works too)
    • 1 cup rolled oats
    • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
    • Icing sugar for dusting
    • Clotted cream, vanilla ice cream or custard for serving

    Instructions

    PRE-HEAT the oven to 180ºC.

    COMBINE the prepared apples, cinnamon, cornflour, water, vanilla essence and sugar together in a bowl.

    POUR into a baking dish and set aside while you make the crumble.

    IN a bowl, combine the butter, flour, oats and sugar.

    RUB the butter into the dry ingredients until they look like breadcrumbs.

    POUR the crumble mixture over the apples.

    BAKE for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the crumble is golden.

    REMOVE from the oven and finish off with icing sugar.

    SERVE with clotted cream, vanilla ice cream or custard.
