• Springbok front-row titans Ox Nche, Trevor Nyankane, and Bongi Mbonambi have turned their on-field teamwork into a thriving business.

Rugby titans Ox, Trevor and Bongi officially launched their wine venture, Bomalumz, in May 2025, seeing steady growth with an overwhelming response from fans and the rugby community. The idea for the brand started right after their rugby legacy ended in the Rugby World Cup final back in 2023. The three embraced on the field, ending their rugby career together after years of hard work and sacrifice, sharing an undeniable, deep-rooted brotherhood.

As their conversations turned to life beyond their rugby career, the group circled back to their last moment on the field. And just like that, their new wine venture was born: aiming to recapture that feeling of joy, unity, and pride they felt when the final whistle blew in 2023. “So, we figured, what better way to share that with the world than through wine,” Ox said.

    Cue Bomalumz

The inspiration for the name Bomalumz came from the endearing nickname, “bo malume” (Sotho/Tswana for “the uncles”), they had long been called by at games and gatherings. They used this and their strong on-field chemistry, deep trust and understanding to fuel their business venture.

Working closely with the Van Loveran Family Vineyards, “the uncles” found a key partner in bringing their vision to life. The grapes are harvested from the Robertson Valley – chosen for its balanced climate and rich soils.

They’ve been incredible and guided us through the process while letting us shape our identity,” Ox said.

Bomalumz Wines feature three varieties to reflect the trio’s individual personalities. Trevor is the face of the lively rosé, aptly named Olé Olé Olé Rosé, while the bold, layered red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Dark Arts, is named after Ox. Lastly, but not least, the easy-going and quietly confident Sauvignon Blanc, Kantlyn, reflects Bongi’s choice.

From the beginning, “the uncles” have been elbow-deep in every process of the business. Trevor runs launches, activations and content. Ox, enjoying calmness and structure, is in charge of logistics and operations. Leaving Bongi as the voice of reason, keeping things in check, running smoothly and asking the tough questions. Not only do the trio have a firm grip on the business, but they get their hands dirty, too. Connecting with consumers

Luckily for the former rugby stars, they didn’t need to look far for support, but there was the question of uniqueness in an already pretty saturated wine market. But as easy as it was to get support, that question also seemed to have a simple answer. “Made by Springboks, enjoyable by everyone,” said Trevor. Ox added to that with, “It is not too serious, but seriously good.”

Once the brand officially launched last year, the response and connection with consumers were overwhelming. Fans and the rugby community have been engaged with the new wine business, bringing bottles to games, posting about the wines on social media, and sharing their Bomalumz moments.

Bomalumz is more than just a business in need of support. It’s a mission for the former rugby trio. It aims to inspire young people and celebrate culture – showcasing that anyone can create something meaningful, regardless of background.

We want to champion black excellence in spaces where it’s often overlooked and make a subtle yet significant impact. We’re about doing good for the sake of it, without needing recognition,” said Ox.

    The future is looking sparkling

With Bomalumz already a success in the market, with the pros taking them more seriously than they initially would have thought, the trio already have expansion plans. Bongi is exploring non-alcoholic wines to include everyone at the table, while Trevor envisions creating sparkling wines apt for celebrations.

Their latest release has already started a buzz, but one that’s more synonymous with a caffeine kick than wine. Meet Bomalumz Coffee for South Africa. “Hand-roasted in small batches to honour our craft, our roots & your cup. At Bomalumz, Ox, Bongi, and Trevor roast with purpose – rich flavour, real connection, and, as Bongi puts it, all ‘for South Africa'” – Bomalumz.
