• Carpets can make or break a space. Too big and they overwhelm the space; too small and they throw everything else off; not to mention how grubby or smelly carpets just put people off. For most carpets, vacuuming isn’t enough. You need to create a routine and use specific cleaning materials to keep your carpet looking and feeling fresh.

    How to clean your carpet

Your carpet or rug sees a lot of action – whether it be foot traffic, kids’ playtime, or pets’ leisure time – and this action not only introduces dust, outside debris, drool, spills/stains and pet dander, but it may also lead to trapped odours and invite unwanted critters, like carpet beetles and mites (nasty). A regular cleaning routine (with consistent deep cleaning every 6 to 12 months) is the only way to mitigate the nasties. And of course, some extra help from carpet cleaning materials.

Since carpets and rugs cover a significant portion of a space, any mishaps, dirt or stains will be obvious. Professional cleaners suggest vacuuming carpets and rugs with high foot traffic every day, and those with less foot traffic once or twice a week. The best vacuum to use is a closed-system HEPA vacuum cleaner, since it sucks up and traps around 99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns (like the pet dander and mites).

Ensure you open windows and doors when vacuuming, and once in a while, vacuum underneath carpets and rugs, too. If you want to take it one step further, hang up your carpet or rug outside. Use a broom (or old school carpet beater) to hit and dust it. Then leave it out in indirect sun for an hour or so before placing it back inside. Sunshine and fresh air do wonders.

Refreshing & Deep cleaning your carpet

When it comes to deep cleaning, it is advised that you call in the professionals. They have the right tools and cleaning materials to get the job done right. Professionals suggest you deep clean carpets and rugs at least once or twice a year (again, depending on foot traffic and pets). However, you can deep clean yourself in between professional visits, using store-bought cleaning products.

Products that help refresh and remove odours include:

    • Carpet shampoo (helps lift stains and odours)
    • Carpet stain remover (great for removing small to medium-sized stains)
    • Carpet powder (sprinkle, leave for a few minutes, and vacuum to remove debris and odours)

    Removing stains and odours

Accidents happen all the time, and usually lead to stains and unwanted odours. The best way to combat those is to be proactive. Immediately blot away stains, like spilt wine or urine, with a kitchen towel or a microfibre cloth. Use a store-bought carpet stain remover to spot treat the area – or make your own with some mild dish soap and water.

Ensure you air-dry wet areas of the carpet and vacuum them to lift any leftover debris. This immediate action will help prevent unwanted odours from developing.
