We all obviously love our pets, but their outdoor habits, bathroom habits, and after-dinner surprise stinks can vacate a room within seconds. Whether you’re tired of wet cat food wafting through the house or can’t seem to get rid of the wet dog smell on the couch, it can feel impossible to get those odours out of your home. Which is why we’ve rounded up five expert tips for pet odour removal that will quickly reset your house smell.
1. Vacuum regularly
Vacuuming at least twice a week, or regularly, will help prevent hair buildup. It’s no secret that pets shed, especially in the warmer months, and those hairs can leave lingering odours. Make sure you vacuum in their usual spots, like the couch, their pet beds, pillows, cushions, rugs, mats, and beyond.
2. Groom them frequently
What better way to eliminate unwanted odour than starting at the source: your pet! Wash your dogs at least once a month (especially if they’ve been frolicking in stinky dams or mud pits on walks), and brush their coats every week to reduce unwanted odours. If you can manage it, wash your cat if brushing their coats ain’t cutting it.
Additionally, consider making your very own dog deodoriser spray for those in-between bath moments. You can use this to refresh your dog’s coat every week, with the essential oils eliminating odours and keeping your pup calm. Remember to consult your vet before trying it out to avoid skin allergies from breaking out on your dog. We find that Martha Stewart’s DIY dog deodoriser recipe works wonders!
3. Keep pets off furniture
We all love the cuddles shared between our furry friends, but it comes at a price. Hair buildup on the couch or your bed, not to mention the smells, too. Consider implementing a strict ‘no pets on furniture‘ rule (or if you’re like me, limit them to certain spaces).
4. Invest in machine-washable pieces
Or, consider investing in machine-washable home pieces to make your life easier and your furry friends ultra comfortable. Look for machine-washable sofa covers, cushions, rugs, mats, and pet beds. Wash at least once a month and spot-clean every week!
5. Clean up any pet accidents ASAP
Pets have accidents just like us, or cats are so proud they bring their murder-gift inside and leave it on your favourite carpet. Try to clean these messes up as soon as possible to avoid the odours from sinking in and taking over.
How to remove odours
- Use vinegar: Spray vinegar directly onto the pet stain and use a microfibre cloth to rub it out (repeat as many times as necessary). This works great for accidents on fabrics.
- Use an enzymatic cleaner: For more stubborn accidents, like an upset tummy, use an enzymatic cleaner (like ProBac or sprays from Faithful to Nature). The enzymes in the cleaning product work fast and effectively remove both the stain and odour. Spray directly onto the area and gently rub with a microfibre cloth. This works great for accidents on fabrics and hardwoods.
