• Last week, on 1 October, Food&Home attended the Made in Italy Exhibition curated by the Embassy of Italy in Pretoria, in partnership with the Italian South African Chamber of Trade and Industries (ItalCham) at Nedbank’s Atrium in Sandton, Johannesburg – an event dedicated to showcasing the excellence of Italian design, gastronomy, coffee, and wellness.

The exhibition formed part of the Italian Embassy’s Italy’s Secret Unveiled initiative, which aims to strengthen trade, tourism, and cultural ties between Italy and South Africa. The event welcomed business leaders, cultural influencers, and distinguished guests for an immersive journey into Italian artistry up close.

In his opening remarks, the Italian Consul General Livio Spadavecchia underscored the importance of Italy-South Africa relations, emphasising collaboration, investment, and shared appreciation for quality craftsmanship and lifestyle.

From culinary performances by the Prue Leith Culinary Institute (inspired by their collaboration with ALMA, Italy’s leading culinary school) to charming displays of authentic olive oil, pastas, and gelato by Italian Deli Online, Pick ‘n Pay and Baglios, and stunning displays of Italian design and craftsmanship by Technogym, Bialetti, Alfa Ovens, Ross and Brown, Ariston, Macron, Ducati, and Superveloce.

As the breathtaking Nedbank Atrium quietly started revving up, the atmosphere soon warmed with the aroma of espresso and the sound of Italian music. Visitors sampled regional delicacies, including fine olive oils, cheeses, cured meats, and iconic Italian dishes like melon with prosciutto, beef carpaccio, spinach and pine nut quiche, gemelli pasta with pesto and mini cannolis. Iconic brands such as Peroni and Ferrero added a touch of la dolce vita.

Beyond the food and drink, the exhibition highlighted Italy’s influence in wellness and design, featuring displays from Technogym, Bialetti, Alfa Ovens, Ross and Brown, Ariston, Macron, Ducati, MSC Cruises, and Superveloce;  brands that continue to innovate with timeless style.

While intimate in scale, the event captured the enduring elegance and creativity that define the Made in Italy ethos: a reminder that cultural exchange often begins around a shared table, with good coffee and even better conversation.
