• It happens to the best of us – you get to the bottom of the peanut butter jar and there’s just enough left to tease you, but not nearly enough for a decent sandwich.

Instead of scraping aimlessly or tossing it out, why not turn those last spoonfuls into something delicious? Here are five easy ways to make the most of every last bit.

Try this recipe: Peanut butter chocolate fondants

    Creamy peanut butter hot chocolate

Before rinsing the jar, pour in some warm milk and stir until the peanut butter melts into it. Add a spoon of cocoa powder or a drizzle of melted chocolate, and you’ve got yourself a comforting, nutty hot chocolate.

    Zesty peanut dressing

That little bit of peanut butter is the perfect base for a quick salad dressing. Simply add a splash of soy sauce, a squeeze of fresh lime, a dash of sesame oil, and a touch of chilli. Close the jar, give it a good shake, and pour it over crunchy slaw or noodles.

    Peanut and chocolate drizzle

Warm a bit of chocolate in the jar (a quick zap in the microwave or a bain-marie works well) and stir until it blends with the peanut butter. Let it cool slightly, then drizzle over vanilla ice cream or fresh fruit for an indulgent treat.

Overnight oats with a nutty twist

Use your jar as the container itself. Add oats, a splash of milk, a dollop of yoghurt, a pinch of cinnamon and some chia seeds. Give it a stir, pop it in the fridge overnight, and by morning you’ll have creamy overnight oats with the perfect hint of peanut butter. Top with banana slices and nuts before digging in.

    Peanut butter snack jar

Pop a handful of rice puffs or cornflakes into the jar, melt a few chocolate chips, and stir everything together. Add a dusting of icing sugar, close the lid, and shake until coated. It’s a quick, crunchy snack you’ll want to eat straight from the jar.

Who knew those last smears of peanut butter could be the secret to something so tasty? Next time you’re tempted to toss the jar, try one of these instead – you’ll never look at the “end” of peanut butter the same way again.
