• Immortalised by the beloved canines in Disney’s Lady and the Tramp (1955) spaghetti and meatballs is an absolute classic. Making your own meatballs makes all the difference in this dish. Whip it up and share it with someone special (don’t forget to reenact the famous kiss!).

    Spaghetti and meatballs

    Serves: 4
    Cooking Time: 20 mins

    Ingredients

    • 500g minced sirloin
    • 1 small onion, minced
    • 30ml (2 tbsp) fresh breadcrumbs
    • 10ml (2 tsp) garlic salt and ground black pepper, to taste
    • 1 large egg white, lightly beaten
    • 30ml (2 tbsp) basil pesto
    • 400g tomato pasta sauce
    • 400g spaghetti, cooked
    • 80ml (¾ cup) Parmesan, freshly grated
    • 80ml (¾ cup) fresh basil, snipped

    Instructions

    1

Combine the meatball ingredients and 30ml (2 tbsp) of the pesto into a mixing bowl. Using wet hands, shape the meat mixture into 25 small meatballs.

    2

Heat a large frying pan, coated with cooking spray, over medium heat until hot.

    3

Place the meatballs in the frying pan and cook, browning on all sides for about 10 minutes.

    4

Stir in the tomato sauce, cover, reduce the heat and simmer until the meatballs are done, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Serve the meatballs over spaghetti, and sprinkle with the Parmesan and fresh basil.
