How does it work?
Refreshi, inspired by and modelled after successful initiatives in Europe and North America, was born from the sad realisation of South Africa’s food waste. To date, our country is responsible for one-third of global food waste, amounting to around 10 million tonnes annually. All while 20 million South Africans go to bed with empty stomachs.
This is where Refreshi comes in. To combat food waste, the company has created a digital platform connecting surplus food from businesses (hotels, bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets, and coffee shops) with consumers. Refreshi launched in Stellenbosch earlier this year and plans for nationwide expansion by the end of 2025.
