• South Africans love pap – it’s a household staple that can be dressed up or enjoyed plain. But just when we thought we’d seen it all, TikTok gave us avocado pap – a dish that’s leaving Mzansi divided.

The trend started with local food creator @harppiness, who blended ripe avo into pap while it was still cooking. The result? A creamy, green-tinted dish that she served with amasi.

While some viewers were curious, others couldn’t wrap their heads around the unusual pairing. “I’m the first person in my bloodline to see avo pap,” one TikTok user joked. Another dubbed it “matcha pap.”

Despite the mixed reactions, the recipe quickly went viral. Other creators jumped on the trend, experimenting with their own versions – from topping avo pap with yoghurt and chia seeds to doubling up with extra avo slices.

This isn’t the first time pap has been given a modern makeover. We’ve already seen pap nuggets, cheesy pap and even a cheesy koeksister hybrid make waves online. Clearly, Mzansi is having fun reinventing a comfort classic.

Love it or hate it, one thing’s certain: avocado pap proves there’s no limit to how creative we can get with food.
