    Every year on 13 May, Dutoit Agri celebrates Apple Pie Day— a time to honour the fruit that has shaped our orchards, our heritage, and the tables of families across South Africa. Apples are at the heart of what we do, and this day is our way of inviting you to pause, savour the season, and share in the simple joy of baking.

    Whether you love your apples tart and crisp, or baked into something warm and nostalgic, we’ve got two delicious recipes to help you celebrate this year’s harvest in style.

    Apple Pie Coffee Cake

    A decadent twist on a classic, this spiced apple bake blends Dutoit Agri Granny Smith apples with cinnamon, coffee, and a hint of indulgence. Perfect for a cosy afternoon treat—or the next morning with your favourite brew.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1½ tsp baking powder
    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
    • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
    • ¼ tsp salt
    • 1 cup whole milk
    • ½ cup vegetable oil
    • 4 large eggs
    • 3 medium Dutoit Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
    • 1 cup miniature marshmallows (optional)
    • ½ cup chocolate chips
    • ½ cup coffee

    Method

    1. Preheat oven to 175°C. Line a tin with baking paper and spray with non-stick spray.
    2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.
    3. Add the milk, oil, and eggs. Mix until smooth.
    4. In a baking pan, layer the batter and apples alternately until used up.
    5. Bake for 45–50 minutes. Insert a toothpick to check if the centre is cooked through.
    6. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Optional: drizzle with caramel sauce. Enjoy!

    Apple Crumble Pie

    A comforting, classic dessert featuring a buttery shortcrust base, spiced apple filling, and golden crumble topping. Best served with fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

    For the pastry

    Ingredients

    • 1¼ cups cake flour
    • 2 tsp icing sugar
    • Pinch of salt
    • 110g butter
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 2–3 tbsp cold water

    Method

    1. Place flour, sugar, salt, and butter in a food processor. Pulse to breadcrumb texture.
    2. Add egg yolk and water; pulse to form a dough.
    3. Shape into a ball, cling wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
    4. Roll out on a floured surface, line a 24cm fluted pie dish, and chill while you make the filling.

    For the crumble

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup cake flour
    • ½ cup brown sugar
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • ½ cup butter (melted and cooled)

    Method

    1. Combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.
    2. Stir in butter until clumps form. Set aside.

    For the filling

    Ingredients

    • 8 Dutoit Granny Smith apples
    • Juice of 1 lemon
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • ½ tsp nutmeg
    • 3 tbsp cake flour
    • ½ cup castor sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract

    Method

    1. Peel, core, and thinly slice apples.
    2. Toss with lemon juice, vanilla, sugar, flour, and spices.

    Assemble the pie

    1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
    2. Fill the chilled pastry base with apple mixture.
    3. Place the dish on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.
    4. Remove, sprinkle crumble on top, reduce oven to 170°C, and bake for 45 minutes until golden.
    5. Cool for at least 3 hours before serving.
