• This Heritage Month, food lovers in the Cape have a unique opportunity to experience the culinary brilliance of two of SA’s top chefs. Chef of the Year Johannes Richter joins acclaimed Chef Sebastian Stehr on 6 September at the Eat Out Two-Star beyond Restaurant on Buitenverwachting Wine Estate, in Constantia, for a one-night only collab.

    Both chefs share a passion for highlighting indigenous ingredients and sustainable cooking.

    It’s always fantastic to cook with someone who shares an ethos or vision. Sebastian and I are certainly on the same page when it comes to both cooking philosophy and sustainability, and I think that’s going to make these dinners really special,” says Richter.

    What you can expect

    Both chefs will present a seven-course menu highlighting the best produce on offer, taking diners on a journey from the east to the west coast of SA. Jennifer Hugé and Johanna Richter, the restaurants’ respective sommeliers, will curate beverage pairings.

    Heritage Month provided the perfect backdrop for this collaboration,” says Stehr, adding, “Chef Johannes’s cooking is such a beautiful representation of KwaZulu-Natal and all it provides, and I’m excited to serve up our interpretation of the Cape alongside his.”

    Sustainability is central to the collab

    The LivingRoom, recipient of the Eat Out Woolworths Green Star Award 2025, is known for its hyper-sustainable approach: sourcing seasonal, indigenous ingredients from small, local producers, cooking with fire using invasive alien wood species, running entirely on solar power, and maintaining a minimal-waste kitchen.

    At beyond, Chef Stehr’s commitment to sustainability is equally impressive. What began as a showcase of the indigenous Cape ingredients has bloomed into an on-site indigenous garden, serving as both a unique garden and a preserved natural ecosystem.
