• One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor!

“South Africa is the fourth-largest consumer of tequila in the world,” says Nic Haarhoff. Nic is not only a partner in Mexican diners, El Burro and Cabrito Bar (Green Point and Newlands) – and recently, El Burro Taqueria in Tamboerskloof – but he’s also involved in a tequila import business and has spent a fair amount of time researching the spirit in its place of origin, Mexico. “The attitude towards tequila is changing and people are starting to take it as a serious product. Mezcal is a pending explosion in the South African market; it will add to the agave category and we’ll start seeing tequilas moving more in a whisky-style direction in terms of appreciation”.
