• After serving the Franschhoek community for nearly six years, the Chefs Warehouse at Maison is set to close its doors due to extenuating circumstances.

The beloved restaurant was named in the Eat Out Top 20 list in 2019.

Head chef and co-owner David Schneider says, ‘How do I sum up five and a half years?’

For David, it’s an emotional time as he considers the staff, who always come first. He says, ‘Breaking up the team is the saddest thing for me, but as a business, you sometimes have to rethink the concept and re-evaluate things.’

Although the restaurant had an incredible season, David explains that it’s not a decision based on the business’s success. The Maison employees will be offered opportunities within the group, and David and co-owner Liam Tomlin hope that many will choose to continue with them.

Liam told Eat Out that the pandemic taught him that change is the only constant. He and David are devastated about the closure but excited about what’s to come.

‘One thing I’ve learned from COVID is that we need to not become attached.’

‘We’re very sad to do it because out of all the restaurants, I think it’s probably my favourite to go to because of the location and the people. But it’s just a business decision we had to make,’ said Liam.

The team released a statement thanking their loyal customers for their support over the years. Although Liam and David may be closing this chapter, they will continue to work together, and diners can look forward to their new Asian-themed venture, The Red Room, at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, opening in mid-April.

David is personally excited about The Red Room, saying, ‘I want to take that next step to become a chef-owner and to support other restaurants in the group.’

The Chefs Warehouse at Maison will continue to take reservations until its final day of service on 28 May 2023, for Sunday lunch.
