• We all love a good monthly house-clean, especially the ones where you get to clean in all those stubborn corners. In order to achieve this thorough clean, we rely heavily on our favourite cleaning detergents and disinfectants that ensure our homes are not only fresh but free of those stubborn germs.

In this article we will discuss whether cleaning products expire and if you can still use them after they’ve reached their peak.

Do cleaning products have a shelf life?

Like most products, your cleaning products and disinfectants have an expiration date. You can find the expiration date of your cleaning products either at the bottom of the bottle or at the back of the printed label. If you find that there is no date due to long periods of use, contact the manufacturer of the product to find out about the expiration date.

Can you still use cleaning products/disinfectants once they have expired?

The simple answer is no. Most cleaning products/disinfectants serve the primary role of removing dirt and killing germs/bacteria thus, using them after their expiration date won’t give the same result as when they were still effective.

Signs to look out for if the product is expired:

    • Look at the consistency of the product; if you notice it to be lumpy, it might be expired.

    • A change in colour of the product.

    • If you notice separation in the product before using it.

The best way to dispose of expired cleaning products:

Make sure, before you dispose of your cleaning products, that you read the instructions on the label to know the best way to get rid of them. Do not pour them down the sink.
