One of South Africa’s favourite cooking competitions is heading back to our screens, and if you’ve ever dreamed of putting your culinary skills to the test, now is your chance. Applications for the next season of Kokkedoor are officially open, and the show is returning to the format that made it a household favourite.
Since first airing in 2013, Kokkedoor has celebrated South African food culture, pairing traditional cooking with creativity and innovation. Over the years, viewers have enjoyed various spin-offs, including Kokkedoor: Vuur & Vlam, Kokkedoor: Son & See, Koekedoor, and the junior editions for younger cooks.
For the upcoming season, titled Kokkedoor: Klassiek, the show is going back to its roots. Contestants will be challenged to honour South Africa’s rich food heritage while proving they can think on their feet in the kitchen. Expect classic flavours, nostalgic dishes, and a few unexpected twists along the way.
Are you an Onthoukok or a Kinkelkok?
The competition is searching for ten Onthoukokke and ten Kinkelkokke.
An Onthoukok is someone with a passion for traditional cooking and heritage recipes. Whether you’ve learned from family members, collected treasured recipes over the years, or simply love recreating comforting classics, this category could be for you. Formal culinary training is not required.
A Kinkelkok, on the other hand, is a qualified chef or someone with professional kitchen experience and strong technical skills. Creativity is key, as these cooks are expected to reinterpret and elevate traditional dishes in new and exciting ways.
What’s up for grabs?
Besides national recognition, the winning team will walk away with a whopping R1 million prize and the coveted Golden Rooster trophy.
