Grocery shopping just got that much quicker with the help of Sixty60’s new AI-powered personalised shopping assistant, Pixie. One of the first online retailers in South Africa to introduce Smart AI in their app, Checkers has the goal to make online shopping easier, personalised and faster.
Meet your new AI shopping assistant
Pixie has been entirely developed in-house by ShopriteX, and focuses on predicting what individual customers actually need, and then they need it. How does it work? Pixie learns from how each customer shops – their regular items, interests, and daily routines (it will even pick up if you have regular braais on Fridays, for example).
Beyond a fresher, simpler user experience, Pixie also presents customers with personalised offers based on what they actually buy as well as other similar deals, rather than a bunch of random deals. This is evident in the all-new interface that lets users simply swipe to browse, swipe up to remove, or swipe down to add to their basket. Although a little dating-app coded, this new interface is incredibly easy to use and also means the days of endless searching and scrolling for products are gone.
This is the dawn of using the best of Ai to make shopping simpler and more personalised for consumers. Pixie is like a little friend, assisting each customer quietly in the background, making shopping and saving effortless. Shopping used to be something you did. But now, it’s something Pixie, your personalised shopping assistant, handles for you. It’s shopping, magically simplified.” – Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer for the Shoprite Group
The first South African technology built for shopping
Developed by a cross-functional ShopriteX team, Pixie isn’t just another copy-and-paste AI model – it had a lot of input from product designers, data scientists, machine learning engineers and software developers. It’s powered by Xtra Savings, Checkers retail rewards programme – the largest rewards programme in the country – and has a myriad of data that helps make it smarter with every shop.
Pixie has launched in beta with Xtra Savings Plus members on 9 April 2026, with plans in place that aim to introduce conversational features that extend this personal shopping assistant’s capabilities beyond just recommendations to automatically reorder household essentials and even plan weekly meals based on a customer’s budget or what they have stocked in their pantry.
