• Redberry Farm, situated in George, has been celebrated for one of its more unique features: a massive hedge maze. Great Gardens of the World recognised it as one of the most impressive and challenging of its kind, once again putting South Africa on the map.

The Redberry Farm Hedge Maze consists of seven stations, a 25-meter underground tunnel and features a giant strawberry with a lookout point, all to be found within the 10km pathways. The hedges are grown from over 30 000 Syzgium Paniculatum plants.

The design of the maze was conceptualised and crafted by Redberry owner Mark Miller and former farm manager Jonathan Grey. It was planted in 2010 and only opened publicly in 2013. It took three years for the trees to grow to an appropriate height and to be classified as a maze.

The objective of Redberry Farm’s Hedge Maze is to find your way out, much like a conventional maze. However, what sets it apart is the quest to locate all seven concealed strawberry stations inside. Upon discovering each station, visitors can stamp their maze card with a symbol. It’s imperative to note that, in order to receive a reward at the end, a stamped maze card with seven unique icons must be presented.

A maze adventure costs R40 per person and must be booked in advance. The ± half-hour walk is suitable for children and the elderly alike. From strawberry picking to bumper boats, Redberry Farm — a Garden Route gem — has plenty on offer, in addition to its leafy attraction. There are also shops and multiple eateries on the premise, perfect for a full day out.

In winter, Redberry Farm hosts a Moonlight Maze event, where you’ll get the chance to find your way via flashlight.
