Food & Wine Pairing – September 2019

September 6, 2019
Coleslaw with lemon and orange dressing

This month’s wine selection pays homage to the winners – paired with winning recipes from our magazine.

Bon Courage André’s Fame Colombard 2019, R58

Something different to try for sauvignon blanc lovers; and at a very friendly price, too. This single-varietal colombard is unusual in that the grape variety is usually used as a blending component in white wines, or as a base for brandy-making. It’s super crisp with plenty of juicy tropical fruits, dominated by pineapple and guava. Simply made for sipping it in the sun.

Pair with: Coleslaw with lemon and orange dressing

Survivor Pinotage 2017, R175

The Survivor Pinotage 2017 was recently named one top wines in the 2019 ABSA Top Ten Pinotage Competition, the benchmark for the variety in the country. It’s one of those exceedingly delicious and satisfying wines – ripe purple plums, prunes and milk chocolate co-mingle with summer strawberries and cherries. The oak – after 15 months maturation – is well-integrated and contributes a fine seam of spice.

Pair with: Red wine-braised short ribs with marrow and parsley

Stellenrust The Mothership Chenin Blanc 2018, R480

Awarded as one of the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge, this wine is something special. The chenin comes from old bush vines planted in 1964 to decomposed granite. The wine was fermented with wild yeast in both foudre as well as concrete eggs and thereafter was blended to concrete eggs for gross lees maturation of up to 12 months. Intense and concentrated, white peach, pear, elderflower and chamomile round out into a palate of fleshy dessert peaches with the piquancy of nectarine and that mineral texture so characteristic of old vines.

Pair with: Cumin-crusted pork fillet with aubergine and tomato curry

Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chardonnay 2019, R70

Stellenbosch-based wine estate Kleine Zalze makes a habit of shooting out the lights, in competitions both abroad and locally. It was named Best New World Producer, in May, for the second consecutive year and third time after claiming the title in 2015 too. You will simply not find a better value chardonnay on the market. Lime blossom, orange zest, and baking almonds lead to a full, soft and round mouthfeel, with clean, clear stone fruit.

Pair with: Chicken, cumin and honey meatballs with orzo

Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc 2019, R195

The 2018 vintage of this wine walked away as best white wine overall and top Sauvignon Blanc clinching two trophies earlier this year at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London.  The grapes are sourced from low-yielding dryland vineyards grown on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg. The wine is deeply concentrated, and displays just how well this variety does when its grown in a cooler region—pithy aromas of lime, lemongrass and grapefruit; and much like a sauvignon from the Loire, it exhibits flavours of blackcurrant and elderflower against a supporting cast of stone fruit.

Pair with: Fish tortillas with fennel slaw and sour cream
