Lanzerac Wine Estate has enjoyed a long history of having pioneering women at its helm who have developed the farm into what it is today. Among them are Anna Hoeks (AKA the Widow Hasselaar), wife of the Estate’s first owner, who grew the property through the acquisition of adjacent farms in the 1700s. Following in her footsteps were her domineering daughter-in-law, Maria Elizabeth Hasselaar (nee van Coningshoven) and great-granddaughter, Anna Groenewald (nee Hasselaar). There was also Elizabeth Catherina ‘Kitty’ English who gave the land its current name in the 1920s and successfully shook up the Stellenbosch wine route with the establishment of Lanzerac as one of the most modern wineries in the Cape.
Each of these women contributed to the growth of the Estate, from developing its world-class winery and making alterations to the iconic Manor House and outbuildings that today serve as luxurious rooms and suites, to planting many of the grape varietals on the land. In memory of these formidable females, Lanzerac will be celebrating women throughout the month of August.
On Women’s Day, the 9th of August, a special Afternoon Tea will be served at the Manor Kitchen – offering guests an ideal way to show appreciation for an extraordinary woman. Enjoy a table laden with freshly baked cakes, scones, savouries and much more in the elegant new setting. Priced at R280 per person, the Afternoon Tea includes a variety TWG teas, and a glass of Lanzerac MCC on arrival.
The Lanzerac Spa is also offering a luxurious package to encourage guests to relax and unwind. From the 1st to the 31st of August, female guests can enjoy a TheraVine Face and Body Glow experience, an express manicure or pedicure, full use of the spa hydro facilities and a wine and chocolate pairing in the elegantly appointed Tasting Room. This 3-hour 30-minute treatment is priced at R1,100 per person.
What better way to celebrate Women’s Month than in the Winelands, with special friends and loved ones?
