Summer is here, and Pick n Pay has turned up the temperature on flavour with exciting new watermelon varieties that are as striking as they are delicious.
The retailer is stocking three new seedless watermelon varieties – Honeybeam, SunnyGold and Tiger Stripe – bringing a technicolour twist to the nation’s favourite summer fruit.

“Nothing says summer quite like biting into an icy cold slice of fresh watermelon, and these and juicy showstoppers with their exotic, unique colours, are ready to make every sunny moment sweeter,” said Jacqui Peacock, Business Unit Head of Produce & Horticulture at Pick n Pay.
The Honeybeam variety, with its dark green rind and glowing yellow flesh, offers a crisp, honeyed sweetness. The SunnyGold flips the script with a sunny yellow rind and vibrant red flesh. “It’s the perfect centrepiece for eye-catching summer platters at festive season gatherings.”
The juicy Tiger Stripe’s name comes from the classic dark green stripes on its rind. This small-but-mighty watermelon weighs in at around 2.5kg, making it the ideal grab-and-go refreshment for summer picnics – and the perfect size an asap! delivery.
“Watermelon is the quintessential South African summer fruit; it’s refreshing, fun and as soon as you take a bite, it calls to mind sunshine, braais and holidays,” said Peacock. “These new varieties take that experience to a new level, offering customers a colourful and flavourful twist on an old-school summer favourite that never loses its appeal.”
The Honeybeam and SunnyGold varieties are available exclusively at Pick n Pay stores nationwide, adding to the retailer’s growing list of fresh produce innovations. “As part of our ongoing commitment to freshness and quality, Pick n Pay works closely with local growers to bring our customers the best produce – and the most exciting new varieties – every season.”
Whether it’s poolside, at a family braai or as a refreshing treat with a spoon as you watch a Sunday night movie, a slice of technicolour happy is sure to bring summer 2025 to life.
