Serves: 4
Cooking Time: 20 minutes


  • 6 red apples
  • 1,5L boiling water
  • 300g castor sugar
  • 15ml (1 tbsp) golden syrup
  • 5ml (1 tsp) white wine vinegar
  • 5ml (1 tsp) black food colouring + extra, if needed



Place the apples in a large saucepan over medium heat, cover with boiling water and simmer, 5 minutes.


Place a heavy-based medium saucepan over medium heat and cook the sugar and syrup until the sugar thermometer reaches 140°C. Remove from heat and stir in the vinegar and food colouring, adding more food colouring if needed.


Line a baking tray with baking paper. Dip the apples in the syrup and place on the baking tray to dry completely before serving.
