Laundry detergent is a cleaning staple that can do so much more than laundry.
Liquid laundry detergent may keep your clothes fresh and clean, but its abilities go far beyond the washing machine. A small amount of diluted detergent can be a lifesaver, especially when you’re in a pinch. Its gentle sudsing actions can be used in almost every room of the home. Here are 5 ways to use laundry detergent to clean more than just clothes.
1. Floor cleaner
Detergent makes for an effective and simple floor cleaner, especially when used on laminate or vinyl flooring, without leaving a sticky film. Mix one to two drops in 3 litres of warm water for a gentle cleanse.
2. Makeup brush cleaner
Makeup brushes need an effective but gentle cleaner to get rid of the bacteria, sweat, dead skin, and makeup product buildup. Add a couple of drops of laundry detergent to the palm of your hand (or silicone makeup brush cleaner) and then gently swirl the brush in the detergent, rubbing it a little more aggressively until the makeup and grime buildup is pulled from it. Rinse with lukewarm water and repeat if necessary.
3. Lift stains from fabric
Whether you have a spill on your fabric car seats, your newly-bought carpet, or your favourite spot on the couch, laundry detergent can help. Pour a spoonful of laundry detergent in a bowl of water. Dip a micro-fibre cloth into the solution and ring out until it’s damp, not soaking wet.
Use the cloth to gently dab the solution directly onto the stain until it starts lifting. You can repeat this process until the stain starts to lift. Then, rinse the cloth in clean water and repeat the dabbing process until the stain and soap suds are completely gone.
4. Unclogging drains
Believe it or not, laundry detergent can help remove buildup in your drain. Whether the bathroom sink or shower drain, now and then, they struggle to drain properly. Using laundry detergent is not only effective, but a much gentler solution to use on your pipes than commercial alternatives.
Pour one quarter of a cup of liquid detergent (even powdered versions will work) down the clogged drain and wait 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, slowly pour a recently-boiled kettle of water down the drain. You can repeat this once more, or let the hot water tap run for a few minutes to clear any remaining buildup.
5. Clean grimy walls
Whether it’s your bathroom grout, the splashback behind the stove, or sticky kitchen cabinets, laundry detergent will remove the grime effectively. Clear up those grease splatters or soapy grout in no time. Add a few drops of detergent to a spray bottle with warm water, give it a shake, and spray directly onto the grimy area. Use a soft-bristled brush for scrubbing backsplashes, grout, and tiles or a micro-fibre cloth to wipe down cabinets or countertops.
When not to use laundry detergent
While laundry detergent is a useful cleaning material, it’s not a universal solution. Avoid using it on unfinished wooden surfaces or floors, and delicate natural stone, like marble or granite. It can strip sealants or cause dullness on these surfaces. Additionally, it can leave streaks on windows and mirrors, so rather avoid. Stick to specialised cleansers for these surfaces.
