Whether you keep it classic with maple syrup and icing sugar or load them up with fresh fruit, whipped cream, bacon or chocolate, this foolproof recipe is guaranteed to become a breakfast favourite.

     

    Basic waffles

    Serves: Makes 6 large or 12 standard-sized waffles
    Cooking Time: 15 minutes

    Ingredients

    • 300 g cake flour
    • 30 ml (2 tbsp) sugar
    • 20 ml (4 tsp) baking powder
    • pinch salt
    • 2 large eggs
    • 450 ml full-cream milk
    • 125 ml (½ cup) sunflower oil
    • butter/oil, to grease
    • maple syrup, to serve
    • icing sugar, to dust

    Instructions

    Preheat the waffle iron.

    Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, whisk together the eggs, milk and oil and slowly add to the dry ingredients, whisking continuously, to form a smooth batter.

    Grease the preheated waffle iron, pour in the batter and cook until golden brown, 3 – 5 minutes. Serve with maple syrup and a dusting of icing sugar.
