A classic cocktail, originally from Mexico, it’s most sublime when made with freshly squeezed lime juice (not lemon), Cointreau(not any other orange liqueur) and served cold, never frozen.

Serves: 2

  • salt, to taste
  • 100ml tequila
  • 50ml Cointreau
  • juice of 2 freshly squeezed limes
  • 4 ice cubes

Salt resonates pleasantly with the other ingredients and salting the rim of the glass is easily done by skimming the rim with a quarter of lime (or dipping it into a shallow saucer of water), then lightly dipping the rim into a saucer of salt. Wait a few minutes before using the glasses, to allow the salt to dry.

In a cocktail shaker or clean jar and lid, combine the tequila, Cointreau, freshly squeezed lime juice and ice cubes. Shake gently to combine.

Strain into 2 glasses, removing the ice cubes, and serve at once.
