• While you might think that a washing machine’s detergent dispenser cleans itself with every cycle (I mean, it does get filled with water and drained, right?), it’s one of those things in appliances that are often neglected. And a dirty detergent dispenser can, and will, lead to dingy-looking clothes. Meaning lingering residue, and even mould and mildew, is making their way into the drum.

No matter the reasons, you want to ensure your clothes get the best treatment per cycle, and that’s why we’ve created an easy guide detailing how to clean the detergent dispenser in your washing machine.

How to clean the detergent dispenser in your washing machine

While every washing machine differs, there are a few factors that determine how often you should clean the detergent dispenser, like usage, water hardness and visible residue.

Professional cleaners advise that the detergent dispenser be cleaned every two to four weeks (the more you use, the more often you should clean it).

    Here’s what you’ll need:

    • A soft-bristled brush
    • Liquid mild soap, like Sunlight
    • Warm water
    • A clean, dry cloth

How to clean a removable detergent dispenser

    1. Open the dispenser and release the lever to unlock and remove it.
    2. If applicable, remove the inserts from the drawer.
    3. Rinse the dispenser and the inserts with warm water, using the brush to remove buildup.
    4. If you see any stubborn residue, leave the dispenser and the inserts to soak in warm water for at least 10 minutes. This helps soften the residue.
    5. Next, use the mild soap, warm water and brush to gently scrub the dispenser and inserts.
    6. Finally, rinse with warm water.
    7. Dry excess moisture with a clean cloth, and leave to completely air dry.
    8. Reassemble the dispenser if you removed the inserts, and return it to the washing machine.

How to clean a non-removable dispenser

    1. Pull out the dispenser until fully open/or until you feel some resistance.
    2. Dip the brush (or an old, clean toothbrush) in warm, soapy water and gently scrub the inside of the dispenser.
    3. Use a clean cloth to wipe away the soapy water and residue.
    4. Repeat until all the grime has been loosened and the dispenser is clean.

Tips for keeping the detergent dispenser clean

    • Use the right amount of detergent – too much, and you will notice a constant buildup.
    • Avoid harsh and abrasive cleaning products and tools like bleach and abrasive scrubbers. Many types of washing machines (especially front loaders) aren’t compatible with harsh chemicals. Abrasive scrubbers and other tools will lead to scratches on the surface, and as a result, extra places for detergent, mould and mildew buildup.
    • Avoid cleaning the dispenser in the dishwasher: the high heat may warp and damage the material.
    • Use a warm cycle now and then (where applicable): the warm water helps dissolve the detergent.
    •  Wipe spills and spot-treat buildup as they occur.
    • Regularly clean the dispenser and washing machine instead of waiting for a buildup.
