Pies are among the most common lunch items for working people, whether in the office or at home. They’re flaky, savoury, packed with a variety of fillings, and super easy to transport. While you might head over to your nearest petrol station for a quick pie, we’ve curated a list of local bakeries and restaurants that put that little bit more effort into it – making the slightly longer drive worth it.
The best pies in Joburg
1. Not Bread Alone Bakery
Known for making everything in-house, Not Bread Alone’s pies are flaky and filled to the brim with a variety of flavours. Expect a mix of pepper steak, bobotie mince, Malay curry, and roast chicken and sausage pie.
2. Maggie’s Farm: The Home of the Chicken Pie
A little way out of Joburg, Maggie’s Farm is worth the trip. With indoor and outdoor seating, and a whole lot of corners filled with all sorts of foods and homemade goodies, their famous chicken pie is just the cherry on top. Whether you’re after satisfying your pie craving, or getting out of the house over the weekend, or both, then take the time to visit them!

This award-winning bakery is definitely worth visiting in Kempton Park! Although they were voted “Best place to buy a pie” last year, your shopping bag will suddenly be filled with a lot more than pies: cakes, pastries and other delights. Sit down and have a coffee to take in all the baked glory!
4. Bossie’s Pies
Bossie’s Pies has been on the same corner in Linden for years. These specialised pie makers provide a whole range of sizes and varieties, made and baked fresh every day. Even better is that they always have specials on. The only thing is, you’ll need to get there early so you don’t miss out.
5. The Patisserie

Situated in Illovo, The Patisserie has been making its famous chicken pies for around 20 years. It might look very rustic compared to the pies we’re used to getting at BP and Woolies, but boy are they tasty. Don’t worry, if you aren’t feeling like a chicken pie, they have a range of flavours on offer – just make sure to book in advance or show up early!
6. Nice on 4th

Situated in the leafy suburbs of Parkhurst, Nice on 4th has been a firm local favourite for years. Get out and take a seat during your work lunch and enjoy their range of pot pies (they also come in slices if you’re only feeling peckish). Or order your very own supply for the week! Think chicken and mushroom, rump steak, and vegetarian.
